Hamsa hand tattoo

source: pinterest.com

The word hamsa comes from the Arabic خمسة which means the number five. Also commonly called hand of Fatma or Fatima, this symbole is used as an amulet, talisman or jewelry in the Middle-East et North Africa to protect against the evil eye, or the curse believed to be cast by a malevolent glare, usually given to a person when they are unaware.

Hamsa is sort of a «protective hand». Arabs, Jews, Egyptians and Berbers from the Maghreb countries use this hand as a tradition to protect themselves. It is often painted on the walls of houses for protection or hung on the doorways of rooms.

However, most North Africans, Christian or Muslim, believe it is simply a symbol of superstition.

I have worn Hamsa jewelry since I was a little girl. I have always found strength in wearing Hamsa jewelry. They are the perfect accessory accent for bohonistas and has become a favorite amulet pendant among many celebritiy fashionistas such as Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Richie and Lauren Conrad, and it looks like it’s here to stay.

Because of its spiritual message, wearing a Hamsa isn’t a trend per se but more of an individual approach to self-expression which isn’t limited by the current fashion trends. Most women find this type of jewelry encouraging and personal (and often spiritual) – and an interesting accent to finish their outfit.

When buying a Hamsa necklace try selecting the right metal and colors for your skin tone, hair and eyes. Cool metals and colors such as silver, white gold and clear white look best on women with bluish-pinkish undertone. However, warm colors and metals such as red, brown and gold flatter golden/peachy complexions.
